Private Equity Interview

About this interview

A technical interview on Buy-Side & Markets, pitched at the hard level. A voice AI interviewer leads the conversation, adapts its questions to your answers, keeps you on topic, and afterward gives you honest, specific feedback on where you were strong and where to improve. Expect roughly 30 minutes.

What you'll be assessed on

Run a full paper LBO verbally — sources and uses, debt paydown, exit equity value, MOIC, and an IRR approximation — under base-case, growth, multiple-contraction, and higher-leverage assumption sets
Articulate what makes a company a strong leveraged-buyout candidate and defend the three levers of PE value creation (multiple expansion, EBITDA growth, deleveraging), naming which lever is doing the work in a given scenario
Reason about capital structure choices (senior vs. subordinated debt, leverage multiples, covenants) and how they change equity risk and return
Defend a hypothetical deal thesis and its biggest risk the way an investment committee would probe it, including exit-path judgment and rate-sensitivity reasoning
Answer why-private-equity and deal-experience questions by tying personal reasoning back to concrete investor logic rather than generic banker language

A few sample questions

Just examples to set expectations - the real interview has many more and adapts to your responses.

“In one line, why does adding debt to a buyout increase the potential return on the equity check, assuming the deal goes well?
“If you had to rank the two most important LBO-candidate criteria you'd check first before even looking at a deal in detail, what would they be and why those two?
“You're 3 years into a 5-year hold. The business is performing to plan, but the IPO market has been effectively shut for new issuers for the past year, with no clear catalyst to reopen soon. What do you do?
